MedSoc Journey Through 2024

In 2024, MedSoc embarked on an exciting and transformative journey with our student community. From August onwards, we hosted 11 enriching sessions that fostered exploration, learning, and growth across diverse medical topics. Whether you are aiming for a career in medicine or simply seeking to expand your understanding of healthcare, MedSoc provided a dynamic platform to broaden your horizons.

Our Purpose

MedSoc is dedicated to creating a space that:

• Broadens Understanding: Explore diverse aspects of medicine, from specialized fields to the broader healthcare system, such as the NHS.
• Enhances Skills: Develop critical thinking, communication, and problem-solving skills essential for future medics.
• Fosters Collaboration: Connect with peers, mentors, and professionals to exchange ideas, insights, and experiences.

What We Covered

Our sessions delved into a wide range of topics, including:

• Medical Ethics: We explored complex ethical dilemmas like autonomy, consent, Fraser Guidelines, Gillick Competence, and real-world cases such as euthanasia, abortion debates, and the Charlie Gard case.
• NHS Challenges: Tackling real-world issues such as waiting lists, professional strikes, and the allocation of resources in healthcare.
• AI and Robotics in Healthcare: Examining the ethical implications, success stories, challenges, and their future impact in medicine.
• Problem-Based Learning (PBL): A hands-on, case-driven approach to learning that mirrors real-world medical problem-solving.
• Interview Workshops: Tailored sessions offering guidance, practice questions, and strategies to ace medical school interviews.
• Medical Research and Innovation: Exploring cutting-edge advancements in medical research and their impact on patient care.

What Made This Journey Exceptional

The speakers we invited were from diverse backgrounds, each bringing unique perspectives and valuable insights:
 3 senior professionals, sharing decades of medical wisdom.
 3 in-house consultants, offering practical, real-world insights.
 3 sessions led by a junior NHS doctor from London, providing an inside look into the daily realities of practicing medicine.
 2 sessions conducted by a medical student from Imperial College London, shedding light on the life of a medical student and the challenges they face.
 1 session featuring 8 of our talented students, showcasing their knowledge, ideas, and innovative thinking.
 1 talk by an external scientist, offering a deep dive into current healthcare challenges.

Each of these sessions bridged the gap between academic theory and real-world application, sparking thought-provoking discussions and inspiring collaboration across all levels of experience.

Session Format and Schedule

Our bi-monthly sessions were thoughtfully scheduled to fit around your commitments, with regular weekend sessions:

• Saturdays at 4 PM
• Sundays at 3 PM
